Mascara, according to the FDA website, should be tossed between 2 and 4 months. Beauty Alert! says 3 months, because a medical journal* that published test results gives the actual levels of bacteria in a controlled test, and 3 seems to be the number. I have a client who gets a new mascara every month, so feel free to toss it sooner! But don’t hold onto your mascara, you are taking a big chance with your eye health. This is not a marketing strategy. The build up of bacteria in a product that you put near your eye can lead to eye infection.

I know someone who saved all her old mascara tubes. She thought it was great that she could use the old wands to separate her lashes. So she NEVER threw away her mascara. She probably had tubes that were years old, not just months old. I found this out when she had this strange eye thing where the follicles of her lashes got infected and fell out. She had no idea why this had happened, and was perplexed and mortified. After questioning her about her eye make-up, this habit she had of separating her lashes with old mascara came up. She was still not linking the fact that not only was she cross contaminating each new mascara she purchased, but you can only imagine the bacteria that was breeding in those old, gross tubes. She felt very practical by re-using something that other people throw away. I think that is the hard part about keeping your make-up clean and fresh is the feeling that we are wasting product, or being careless with money, or the impact it has on the environment. I feel all those things, too. But the truth is, there is nothing more important than our health, and we can buy products with recyclable packaging, buy products we like but are in our price range, and do other things to save money. NOT saving old mascara tubes to re-use.
